Horse Riding, Cattle Mustering & Animal Management, Rural North Qld

A rural Aboriginal organisation has requested a skill transfer in Horse Riding, Cattle Mustering and Animal Management in preparation for the next local cattle muster envisaged for November/December. The Project will commence as soon as a suitable volunteer has been matched and selected for a duration to be negotiated between the Community and Volunteer. The skills gained will be utilised in further developing the Organisation to later become a self sufficient cattle station, providing training and employment opportunities to the local Indigenous community.

Fencing, NT Project Number 1742N/08
The community has requested various skills in order for them to develop a fruit and vegetable garden. The Community require someone skilled in the area of fencing to build a fence around the garden. The volunteer would be required to work in hot conditions, establishing a large fence around the garden bed. The Community has identified the need for them to produce their own fruit and vegetables as the nearest shop in 50km away, and is expensive to purchase fresh produce. If this project is successful, a duplicate garden will be established. Due to the isolation, the community has recommended that more than one volunteer visit the Community at a time for this project. The volunteers will work alongside the Land Custodian and his 3 sons. Conditions are extremely hot, and only volunteers willing to really “rough it” are encouraged to apply.

A remote community in the eastern Goldfields/edge of Nullarbor of WA is seeking volunteers with experience in office administration, financial management and knowledge of running a community store. A number of (six) community members wish to gain skills that will help them manage an office how to manage budgets, handle money, manage staff, inventory and records to improve the viability of the community and the store. Skills gained would be utilised to manage the community through sound management practices. Initial the project will be for between 3-4 weeks with a view to extending the project if further skills transfer is required.

A co-ordinator of a health service would like to refresh/enhance skills required to manage a health service, as such has requested assistance in all areas of service management and skills associated with running a health service effectively. These skills would include: organisational and community planning, financial management, staff management, organisational governance The project is expected to be an ongoing mentoring role with the volunteer spending the initial 5 weeks assisting and transferring skills to the co–coordinator on a day to day basis or to the extent of the availability of the volunteer. A retail store and Indigenous cultural centre near Bendigo has requested a Broad Hectare Site & Business Planning & Designing project in line with the expansion of the Business for the tourism market. The Business has been operating for three and a half years and currently consists of a permanent retail store, a mobile retail shop and a horse riding/rodeo training centre. The retail shops’ stock includes clothing, saddlery, giftware, furniture, rodeo equipment and sheds. An expansion of the retail business is currently underway with the creation of an online store. The selected volunteer(s) will assist the owner in developing site plans and designs for the purpose of creating an outback tourist attraction.

This Aboriginal Corporation have requested the skills transfer/development in strategic planning, they have requested the skills transfer process to enhance the abilities of corporation members to develop strategic plans. The corporation members would like to use skills gained to develop strategic plans to provide the community with direction in to the future. Opportunities exist for the corporation and community to form various partnerships with business and companies with in their region. The focus of the strategic plans is to provide direction for the corporation and community in terms of engaging present and future financial opportunities. The volunteer would be expected to assist community with their strategic plan whilst transferring skills in strategic planning, implementing mile stones and ensuring the corporation participants understand each step of the plan. This Language Resource Centre have requested assistance in researching funding grants and writing submissions to provide the service with a clear procedure and skills in preparing grant applications. The centre has requested this assistance to develop/enhance staff abilities in researching grants and developing successful submissions to increase their resources and increase the effectiveness of their operations. The volunteer would be expected to transfer skills in grants research and submission writing primarily to apply for funds for further development of two of their offices, to purchase audio visual equipment as well as upgrading their service vehicle.

The Organisation has requested a skills transfer in Governance and feasibility studies. The Aboriginal Corporation is currently in the process of purchasing a crocodile and barramundi farm. They would like feasibility studies undertaken to distinguish the viability of the purchase. The volunteer will be expected to have strong skills in the area of governance, to educate the Board members of the Organisation in running a successful business and the skills to do this. Along with this, the volunteer will be expected to undertake feasibility studies on a number of acquisitions that the Organisation owns, or is looking to purchase. A group of Aboriginal Medical Services request a volunteer to do a skill share project with their organisations to assist in the planning, development and creation of a website. A remote community in the Northern Territory would like to establish an internet café in their community so that community members can access information and resources more effectively. The community would like a volunteer who can provide knowledge to community members regarding how to establish an internet café, use of the internet and basic computer maintenance so that computers remain operational and connected to the internet. The volunteer will transfer skills to a number of CDEP participants. The community would like a volunteer for a 4 – 8 week period and are willing to negotiate a time with the volunteer.

This could be a volunteer who has had experience of a large to medium sized shopping centre, who could pass on ideas to members of the corporation who are interested in starting their own business. Material Specification and Construction Supervision, Qld, Project Number 1739N/08
A remote Indigenous Organisation has requested a building supervisor and plumber to work with the traditional owners to build two camping grounds located in the Injinoo region. A volunteer(s) are sought to specify materials to develop a materials list, and project manage the building of two camping grounds located in the Injinoo region in consultation with the project applicant with assistance from a local Indigenous work crew. Building plans have been designed for the dwellings to be erected on the camping grounds aligned with the Traditional Owners specifications. The project can be delivered either in a part-time or full-time capacity as negotiated between the Community and Volunteer.

Plumber, NT Project Number 1742N/08
The community has requested various skills in order for them to develop a fruit and vegetable garden. Needed is a plumber, able to install a timed sprinkler system. The Community has no running water, but has a large supply of underground bore water. The Community has identified the need for them to produce their own fruit and vegetables as the nearest shop in 50km away, and is expensive to purchase fresh produce. If this project is successful, a duplicate garden will be established. Due to the isolation, the community has recommended that more than one volunteer visit the Community at a time for this project. Conditions are extremely hot, and only volunteers willing to really “rough it” are encouraged to apply.

Refurbishment, South West WA Project Number 1403N/07
This association has requested skills transfer in the area of refurbishments. The association would like a volunteer who has the ability to assess the cost of refurbishing older buildings, develop reports on resources and cost required for the refurbishment and have the ability to carry out the work required for the refurbishment and pass these skills. The association has requested the skills transferral in this area to assist community members and CDEP workers gain the ability to make appropriate decisions in the refurbishment of existing building with in the community.

Home renovation – carpentry, plastering and painting, Project Number 1735N/08
An Aboriginal Corporation owns a house in a remote town inland in the Midwest Region of WA. This house has been empty for a while and has sustained some damages. Most of the damages are only cosmetic (walls etc). The Corporation wants to use CDEP workers who are interested in learning home renovation skills such carpentry, plastering and painting to have an opportunity to develop new skills from an experienced person. There will be up to four CDEP participants involved in the skill transfer project. It is anticipated that the project will take 4-8 weeks to complete.

House Painting, PILBARA WA Project Number 1581N/08
This Aboriginal community have requested transferral of skills in the area of painting houses externally, the community family groups will then used the skills gained to paint their family homes internally. They have requested this assistance to develop/enhance community family member’s abilities in preparation, mixing and painting houses internally and externally. The volunteer would be expected to transfer skills in the area of external house paining, minor repairs to surfaces in preparation for painting. The volunteer will transfer skills to community family members at individual dwellings with in the community, family members will then use the skills gained to paint the interior of their homes. The community envisage the project to run for a six week period. The community have all the resources required to make their project successful.

Building and Plumbing, Eastern Region, Far North QLD Project Number 1520N/08
An Aboriginal Corporation has requested a skills transfer in Building Construction and Plumbing. The location is at a campground and involves the construction of two restroom kits.
The selected volunteer will work alongside 5 members of the community and be staying in basic accommodation at the campgrounds. Current licenses are required for both trade areas. This project is for 4 – 6 weeks.

Machine Operations, Kimberly WA Project Number 1322N/07
The Community have requested a volunteer to transfer skills in operating machinery. They want to have Community members trained in using machinery, safe work practices, provide employment outcomes. The volunteer will be expected to train the Community to operate earth moving equipment i.e. bob cat, backhoe, dozer, grader, loader.

Building Skills, Bakers Hill near Northam – WA. Project Number 1354N/07
A family Corporation who are managing a farm in the Avon Region of WA wish to request a volunteer with building skills. In particular, they want a volunteer who can work with the committee to draw up the building plan (including resources and materials needed, liaise with the shire etc), coordinate the project which will include training members of the family to build 2 sheds/workshops, successfully place 2 transportable homes on property and make a breezeway (including setting up the site/concreting). The project will be carried out in 2/3 stages beginning in August 2007. It could take 3-6 months to complete.
